At Hoekstra’s Market and Greenhouse we have several greenhouses. Most of the houses are covered in a double layer of plastic. Each greenhouse has to have at least one heater to keep the houses from getting too cold at night. We grow vegetables for resale as well as raise all of our own tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons and cole crops for our own fields. We start every vegetable plant from seed. Our work in the greenhouse begins in February, but planning for the season starts months before that. Along with all the vegetables we raise flowers. We start thousands of hanging baskets. We design and plant all our hanging baskets ourselves. We start a lot of our own plants from seed. Some of the ones we start from seed are, marigolds, alyssum, moss roses, gazania, and salvia. We get flowers like geraniums, new guineas, double impatiens, and gerbera daisies in from other growers. They are shipped to us as little plants or “plugs”. It’s very rewarding to watch tiny seeds pop through the soil, or see the first flower bud turn into a beautiful flower. We are reminded that we are only an instrument that makes the flowers grow. Our motto is, “Man plants-God Grants”. That is very true.
